Half Century BIRTHDAY night with a fantastic indie DOUBLE BILL: THE WHEEL + ARUBA!!!
Calgary's deep and elusive group The Wheel emerge after a winter of polishing new tunes and continuing to hone their collective musical conversation. There aim is to play beautiful music for beautiful people, touch hearts and move feet, and explore the sonic realms within our universe.
The Wheel:
The Wheel facilitates an elaborate and colorful conversation between their instruments within the delicate and subtly complex nature of their songs. This is music presented with psychedelic sincerity through means of folk roots and rock n' roll. With elements of sounds reminiscent to Ween, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, and a zest of Sonic Youth when they really get into it, The Wheel thrives in expressive tonal communication.
Fronted by songwriter Patrick Whitten, the group is formed of some long time favorite faces in the Calgary music community including members of The Bitterweed Draw, Copperhead, Shuffalo, Lazer Cake, and the short lived Feeler.
Aruba is coming at you hot to break open spring after holding the fort and helping Calgarians to groove warm this winter.
ARUBA:
A fuzzy and raucously fun nod to The Beach Boys, “Aruba” is a newly released track from a band also called Aruba, based out of Calgary, AB. Chugging guitars and a caressing backing arpeggio lead to the central hook, echoing the classic Beach Boys track with a frenzied, modern feel. The “boys look a little too tough,” slowed-down section at the mid-point impresses with its added variation, steadily rising again to the fun raucousness of the initial feel. The crunchy guitars and six-strong vocal section combine at the conclusion for one last whirring bout of fun. Aruba impress with this self-titled track:
